While some may think sports and dance are worlds apart a closer observation shows that the two can go hand in hand. Athletes may dismiss dance as a “soft” activity but when a sport requires agility, coordination and balance there’s no better way to master those skills than through dance.
This connection was realized as early as 1905 when the Wall Street Journal reported that the American Physical Education Association was going to test out dancing as a part of physical training for gymnasts. Dancing’s advantage can be seen in present times as well. Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swan took dance lessons throughout his NFL career that included ballet and other dance styles. His dance experience made him known for his agility and flexibility on the field. It doesn’t hurt to mention that this NFL Hall of Famer is also on the prestigious list of members of the Augusta National Golf Club.
All of this doesn’t even begin to mention the impact athletes have had in the popular show “Dancing With the Stars.” In the nine seasons the show has aired, athletes have won five of the competitions.
All in all, dancing can enhance any athlete’s game whether it’s for coordination, flexibility, agility or balance. When your sport’s all about movement what better way to enhance your skills than through the body’s natural movement of dance?
